To bring back an old subject. The question was raised by Jon, the 281 was brought in to replace steam in the city of Erie. What class steamer might have been used before the 281 made it to town?

Bob, I don't have a definite answer but I would guess they would have used their 0-6-0, 0-8-0, or 2-8-0's at Erie:

The 227 seems a bit small, but I don't know what the tonnages were in Erie, maybe it isn't too small. 234 seems reasonable but it may be better suited for switching heavier loads such as coal or ore, besides I don't know how many 0-6-0's they had like that. The 0-8-0's and 2-8-0's are also logical choices but I don't know when the 0-8-0's were built, either 1926 or 1936 its kind of hard to read the builders date in THIS PHOTO but I believe it is 1936 as they were built with the Bessemer emblems on their tenders, the early 2-10-4's built in 1929 came with the word BESSEMER spelled out on the tenders. A 2-8-0 may seem a bit too big but as I remember it was a 2-8-0 that was the last operating steamer, working as a yard switcher in Butler.

Looking through a few other postings etc around the interwebs I am going to place my bets on the 0-6-0s filling the order in Erie. With the line to Erie opening in 1891-1892 and new 0-6-0 types coming in 1894 one could bet the older American types may have done the trick at first. In 1936 the Westinghouse probably pushed out one of the 0-6-0s. Possibly Consolidations at one point after being pressed from road service may have filled in, but I doubt an 0-8-0 would have seen the light rail in Erie mainly because they came in 1936, the same year as the 281.
