Here is a B&LE "Coil Coach" 31000 series gondola which I'm working on. The car is a Bachmann Coil Car which I will be modifying to resemble a GBSR-15 class "Coil Coach". So far I have removed the walkways from each end as well as the clamshell covers, added the ladders to the ends and sides, new roller bearing trucks, and body mounted Kadee couplers. I still need to get stirrup steps and a brake wheel. Once completed, the car will become B&LE 31006, painted in the black scheme with white lettering, as seen here: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=572971Attachments:

After spending the summer working on other hobbies (R/C cars) its time to get back into model trains. This project was started in the spring so I figured its time to finish it. Since I last posted an update way back in April I have made significant progress on this car. I added a top chord, brake wheel, etched metal brake platform, new side jack pads cut from brass square tube, stirrup steps, grab irons in between the two ladders on each end of the car, styrene on the side of the car where the original clamshell covers used to roll down the car, and steel wheels. I’m not big on underframe details so I didn’t do a lot there. Added the cushion detail and a new air reservoir. I noticed when building the car that the molded on air reservoir was on the wrong side of the car, so I grinded it off and added a white metal one on the correct side. I’m still not sure if I will add the metal platform to the A end of the car, in photos of this particular car 31006 it looks like it did not have the platform but I think that might be an illusion created by shadows on the end of the car in the picture I was viewing. One other thing to note, I’m fairly certain the Bachmann car is not the correct length. There is not enough space between the end of the body and the first side post to install the ladders in that area so I cheated by attaching one end of the ladder to that first post. I feel once the car is painted not many people will notice. Attachments:
