This may be a little off-track, but got me thinking. Have heard the Union working regularly dragging hoppers up past Oak Hill, so guessing the ET shutdown is over and trains will be running more regularly. One thing that is decidedly Bessemer-esque is the sound of non-turbo EMD 645's working very hard dragging tonnage uphill, while not going particularly fast. In the age of EPA Tier 4 locos, this is becoming a rarity. It's 12 vs 16 cylinder engines, but the collective sound is essentially the same (5 MP15's @ 60 cyl. ~ 4 SD38's @ 64 cyl.) What's missing from the model sound-equipped trains is the fidelity of heavily loaded engines working hard at slow speeds (although LokSounds Full Throttle is getting there) and more importantly the endless clanking procession of hoppers. Most smartphones have audio recording ability. For greater fidelity, quality digital audio recorders are available starting under $100 www.musiciansfriend.com/search?N=511813&Ntt=recorders&Ns=pLHBefore they're gone, consider adding audio recording to photo chases this year. Start recording when you hear the train apprpaching, and stop after the last hoppers disappear into the distance. Future modelers will thank you. If only we had recordings of the old ore jennies on 39' rail...
