Posted by Mitch on July 29, 2011, 7:46 pm, in reply to "B&LE SD-7 #454 (HRT 454) on Great Walton Railroad's Hartwell line: Update" That's great news Nate. 454 looks really good in those 2005 pictures. I'm sure she's looking relatively the same now. I wonder how old that paint job is? Here is a pic from 1980 at Butler Yard www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1456501Her paint looks really good here, but the Bessemer Herald is a bit washed. I'd bet in those time, it was promptly was restenciled at her next visit to Greenville Shops. Could that be the same paint she wears today? From the best of my knowledge, alot of the SD-9 "survivors" that made it into the 1990's and beyond, like 827, 829, 830, 832, 833 have been photographed in 1981-1982 in EXTREMELY fresh paint. It is likely the reason (or a factor in the decision at least) that many of those units were picked to escape the scrapper's torch in 1987 unlike 823, 824, 826, 828, 834, 836, 837, 838, 839, 840, and 842. Maybe 454 did get a fresh shot later in the 1980's during the "roster cuts" and that is what helped steer her fate away from that of 451-453, and 455. It would be interesting to know the year and how old that paint job really is.

Re: B&LE 65000
Posted by Nate Clark on June 28, 2011, 6:22 pm, in reply to "Re: B&LE 65000 & 66000 Southbound in same train, tonight"
Just a thought for possible future preservation: though heavily rebuilt with new inserts to its original body panels, the 65000 might make a nice preservation 'target', when retired. One side and end could be restored in the original red, white and blue Bi-Centennial colors, and the opposite end and side could be painted the familiar black with white markings, complete with correct retro. Bessemer logo. I know, we need to think about the still-surviving SD7 #454, some F7 As & Bs, a '38 and maybe even a TM. The hopper just seems more 'doable'.
Too bad 65000 is a Pullman Standard graduate from Bessemer, AL. Had it instead been built at Greenville Steel Car, it might have made a nice display for the former GSC site here in Greenville (whenever that is redeveloped), as was done with a restored MILWAUKEE ROAD covered hopped at the former Pullman site down in Butler. Of course, that GSC lot (B&LE #65550-66149) was built in November, 1977, after the Bi-Centennial...

B&LE 65000 Pic in Black & White Scheme Posted by Nate Clark on July 17, 2011, 11:33 pm, in reply to "Re: B&LE 65000" A 3/4 view of B end at Heckman Road at Kremis almost six years ago. The horizontal riveted seams for the replacement side panels installed during rebuilding can be seen about a third of the way down from the top chord. bessemer.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1316850

B&LE 65000 en route ET
Posted by Nate Clark on October 16, 2011, 8:44 am, in reply to "B&LE 65000 Pic in Black & White Scheme"
Midday, yesterday, Jon texted me a cell photo he snapped of this veteran hopper as it headed up The Hog Back behind #867 & Co. Though she's no longer wearing her patriotic dress, she's still doing her bit to contribute to the Gross Domestic Product...behind a Bessemer engine that is four years older than she!
While the sun was not cooperative for shooting bright photos along the B&LE during Fall Peak, this weekend, I bet the colors in the pics Jon and his southbound chase buddies got will still be quite vivid, as they often are beneath overcast skies.

About Kasgro 074 I never looked at this car very closely until now and from looking at it very closely i can narrow it down to 3 different SPECIFIC numbers for you. Its either 1990 1991 or 1992. The reason I know that is because, while the BLE had their NE5s and supposedly identical NE4s, the NE4 class had a different side skirting and window pattern on them that matches Kasgro 074. Here is BLE 1991 (NE4) look at the skirting its angled and longer than the NE5s are. rr-fallenflags.org/ble/ble-c1991dsa.jpg Now here is BLE 2002 (NE5) with its smaller side skirting. rr-fallenflags.org/ble/ble-c2002ads.jpg While everybody says the BLE gave the Union Railroad their “retired NE5 class cabooses” they also threw in the other 2 NE4s that weren’t needed. Union C100 and C109, now renumbered 100 and 109, are former NE4 class cars. Here they are on the URR. Again look at the side skirting. URR 100 which was recently repainted and equipped with a new heating system and headlights for the shove to Mifflin yard-from what I heard this cost a lot. URR guys now call this the “Super caboose”. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2916490 Heres URR 109 at Irvin Works. Also repainted yellow. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2353821 Its interesting to note that with Kasgros car and the URR cabs this makes the NE4 class the last entire class of former B&LE cabooses still alive today. Since Kasgro doesn’t know the former number of their 074 I guess that means that the only way to find out its former number would be to find out what BLE numbers the URR cars were, seeing how there were only 3 NE4 cars. With the two URR numbers known, whatever number that’s left would be KRL 074. I know someone who works in the URR Hall shops Ill have to ask about the caboose numbers, unless one of the URR guys who post stuff here would ask about it-that would probably be quicker cause the guy I know doesn’t come around often. Im a member on the URR Yahoo page ill ask there too. I just seen something else that may help identify the Kasgro car. Looking at the picture of BLE 1991 I noticed that the B&LE number is ON THE FRAME-look down and left of where it says charging receptacle on the body. rr-fallenflags.org/ble/ble-c1991dsa.jpg Now look at this picture of KRL 074. I see stenciling on the frame close to where the 1991 had its number on the frame. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=227855 I cant make out what the lettering reads, but it looks like 4 letters and 4 numbers. It might be its BLE number. I hope the info that I have provided helps.

I don't know what happened to it. I remember hearing in 2011 that it and the other 6 axle engines there (sisters 844 and 845) were all supposed to be removed from service that year but the 853 was still running last year (2013). The two SD9's have been out of service for a couple years now.
