I thought I’d start this thread for those who may model any of the other US Steel roads, past and present. Here are some pieces of equipment for another USX road that I’m working on: As you probably have guessed, these are all for the Union Railroad. Typically, I choose oddball pieces which had features that set them apart from the rest of the fleet. I’m still working on these, some are more complete than others. Once I finish a few of these, I may post a completed pic of them together, but I DO NOT intend on posting on this thread that often, as this is a B&LE board. Anyway, from left to right/front to back, here is what I’m working on: One of the new 5000 series coke racks. The prototypes were acquired last fall, and I’m pretty sure I’m the first to attempt these cars in any scale. A class C1 caboose, just like this one except mine will be painted in an older scheme (red with yellow lettering): thepwvhiline.com/HiLineTributeToTheUnionRR/Union%20Railroad006Web.htmlNW2 561 (Athearn), to be painted in the apple green scheme of the 1970‘s. SW7 703 (Athearn), as seen here: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1089526SW9 566 (Proto 2000), as seen here: rr-fallenflags.org/urr/urr566.jpgThis engine holds a special place in my heart, when I was about 4-5 years old, my dad took me to Irvin Works to get a cab ride. The engine I rode that day was the 566. This is also my screen name namesake locomotive. The real 566 still survives today, working for Tube City in West Mifflin Pa, next to the URR/WE interchange. Okay, so I finally have some stuff finished. Only one of these is from above, the rest are other projects that passed the others up:
URR NW2 558, this is actually the 561 I was building above. I changed the build because the real 561 had different carbody louvers than my HO unit. I knew that when I started but pressed on anyway. When I tested the green paint I was going to use it didn’t look right but I already had the decals for the apple green scheme. So I went back through my pictures and found that NW2 558 had the same style louvers my HO unit had, plus wore the original blue paint scheme (the very first blue scheme which reused the stencil style logos and numerals from the previous Apple Green scheme). I liked this because I could still use the decals I already had on hand and make a more accurate locomotive to boot. I did have to construct a new cab because all of the bought new URR NW2’s had the arched style windows above the hood, even thought they blanked out those windows on most of them in later years. Painted and weathered to match the real 558 as it appeared in July 1976.
URR SW9 588, a Proto 2000 unit. The real URR 588 was unique, being built for the Union Pacific as their 1830, was sold to Industrial Maintenance Services (same folks who bought the wrecked hulk of B&LE 864), then sold to Youngstown & Northern before finally coming to the URR. It was one of only a handful of first generation SW units to never have walkways added to the roof or sand fill hatches relocated. This was a pretty straight forward build since there are no walkways sand pipes or even a ladder to add however this engine did have the front porch raised up, presumably by the Y&N which had to be replicated along with the extra railing but this was a piece of cake to do. Took me about 5 days start to finish. Finished in the 1980’s Blue scheme.
URR S4 537, Atlas. Found this and two S2’s at a train show in Ohio about a month ago. They were dirt cheap. Knew exactly which units I wanted them to become. Great part about their Alcos is that there isn’t much to doing them, just add rain gutters to the cab roof and the gryalite on the cab roof. Its not correct but nobody makes the exact type the URR used on their engines back then in HO or any scale for that matter. This is a Western Cullen Hayes flasher but its close enough for me. Finally happy with the apple green color I used a paint chip I have off an actual URR apple green caboose to match the color and I think its about as close as I can get. Painted, decaled and weathered to match the real 537 as it looked in July 1974.
URR 3175, an Athearn 50 foot gondola. This was actually a factory painted car from the Transtar Safety Points train sets. Athearn only did three different numbers on these cars so since I had a couple duplicates I renumbered this one and weathered it. The real URR 3000/3100 series gondolas came from sister USX road EJ&E and could be found in service on the Bessemer:

www.rr-fallenflags.org/urr/urr3149.jpg
Note that this is a stand in, the real cars do not match the URR 3000 series.
EJ&E 200, a Walthers Difco side dump car. A friend had this car but he didn’t want it so I took it. Didn’t know what to do with it until I ran across this picture:
www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1446961
I decaled the car with random decals I had laying around. None of the lettering was meant for any piece of EJ&E equipment it just all kinda came together.
APEX (US Steel) 907, a steel slab car, known locally as a “Slab Rack”. Built from a resin kit produced by the Industrial Model Shop, the prototype cars are in service on the URR between USX Edgar Thomson Works and USX Irvin Work hauling steel slabs. I have only built a couple resin kits but I can honestly say that this was the easiest I have assembled and to me was the most rewarding to put together as it matches a unique prototype that I wanted to model. The slabs on it are cut down State Tool & Die pieces that I think need a bit more weathering to them now that I think of it. I have two more of these cars I’m working on, this one was meant to look as it would have appeared around 1997ish.
EJ&E 7135, an Evans Integral Cover Coil Car. THIS IS A COMPLETE PHONY! Life Like made this way back in the 1970’s and painted it in EJ&E colors. Only 60 of these cars were ever built and none went to the J. I’ve had this car for years it was my dads so I decided to do a what if with it. I retrucked it added new body mounted Kadees and wire grab irons/stirrups. Then it got new clamshell covers which I painted orange and added the EJ&E lettering to. Weathered it. All in all I had fun with it and think it looks like it could have been real.

Great looking models.
Really enjoy the 537.
Did you ever finish the URR Shorty caboose?

Thanks Bob. No I never finished the caboose. I still have it and will someday finish it. It got damaged a little when I moved last month a couple grab irons and the smoke jack fell off. Everybody seems to like 537.
I’m hoping to get more done in the coming weeks. Some MP15’s SW1500’s more gondolas and slab racks, and the Bessemer coil coach I started but never finished. That’s the big one I want to finish, then those pesky WA F7’s.

Always been a big fan of the Buffalos ever since I came across pictures for the first time. True grit right there!
